Overview
Certified Lactation Support Specialists™ (CLSS™) are trusted professionals who provide evidence-informed, family-centered lactation support. This Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice defines the values, responsibilities, and professional expectations that guide all certificants in their work with families, colleagues, and the community.
Candidates and designees must review and attest to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice on an annual basis.
Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
I recognize that this Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, and its principles and obligations, are in addition to those set forth by any other professional or personal Code of Ethics or Code of Conduct under which I operate. Furthermore, I commit to adhere to both the spirit and letter of this Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
I will:
- Professional Conduct: Act with integrity, honesty, and accountability in all professional interactions. Represent the credential truthfully, provide services within the defined scope of practice, and maintain clear boundaries to protect client well-being and trust.
- Respect for Families and Communities: Honor the dignity, values, and choices of every family. Recognize that each family’s circumstances, goals, and traditions are unique and deserving of nonjudgmental support.
- Non-Discrimination: Provide equitable and inclusive care without discrimination based on race, ethnicity, national origin, language, age, religion, ability, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital or family status, military status, or socioeconomic condition.
- Communication and Collaboration: Communicate clearly, respectfully, and compassionately. Promote a supportive environment where families feel heard and empowered, and collaborate with other professionals when referrals or interdisciplinary care are needed.
- Professional Competence: Maintain and continually improve knowledge and skills. Stay current with relevant, evidence-based information and commit to lifelong learning in support of safe, effective, and culturally responsive care.
- Confidentiality and Privacy: Protect the confidentiality of all personal and health information shared by families and colleagues, disclosing such information only with consent or when required by law.
- Intellectual and Professional Integrity: Respect intellectual property and original work, accurately acknowledge the sources of educational or professional materials, and avoid plagiarism or misrepresentation.
- Conflicts of Interest: Disclose any financial, personal, or organizational interests that could influence professional judgment or create the appearance of bias. Always prioritize the welfare of families over personal gain.
- Representation of the Credential: Use the CLSS™ credential appropriately and in accordance with Birthwork Institute’s brand use guidelines. Uphold the integrity and reputation of the designation through ethical, evidence-informed practice.
- Accountability and Certification Status: Accept responsibility for professional behavior. Understand that certification may be suspended or revoked if conduct is inconsistent with these standards or compromises the safety, trust, or well-being of families.
